Sweating is completely normal and necessary for the body to reduce heat. However, excessive sweating (or hyperhidrosis) is a condition that affects the amount of perspiration produced by the body. Sweaty palms are the most common form of hyperhidrosis. It can also cause excessive foot, underarm and facial sweating. Hyperhidrosis is caused by over activity in the sweat glands which produces sweat in greater amounts than the body actually needs.
Individuals suffering from Hyperhidrosis regularly complain about soaking of the underarms within minutes of getting dressed. The sweating is often out of control, unexpected and indeed embarrassing. It can leave the affected areas constantly damp, even making everyday activities difficult and often embarrassing. Those not seeking treatment will typically suffer from it throughout their lives, often with severe psychological and emotional side-effects.
The product BOTOX® is most commonly known as a highly effective treatment for facial frown lines and wrinkles, working by temporarily paralysing the muscles of the face, but it can also be effectively employed in preventing the sweat glands from producing excess levels of sweat. Before the advent of BOTOX®, surgery was one of the few available methods to help Hyperhidrosis sufferers. Today excessive sweating can be easily and successfully controlled with BOTOX® injections.
Benefits of BOTOX ® injections for Excessive Sweating
- Treatment with BOTOX injections is quick and simple, being able to reduce and almost eliminate sweating for about 6 months.
- The treatment requires virtually no recovery time, and normal activities can be resumed immediately following the treatment.
- BOTOX is not permanent and will naturally break down in the body.
- The treatment increases people’s confidence and makes wearing favourite clothes more comfortable and pleasurable.
How is Excessive Sweating treatment performed?
A small amount of BOTOX is injected into 10 to 15 places about 1 cm apart using a very fine needle, then spread evenly into each area. The BOTOX blocks the action of the nerves that supply the sweat glands. This prevents the sweat glands from producing sweat. It works by temporarily blocking the nerve endings, which usually regenerate over a period of 4 to 8 months. For this reason repeated treatment is necessary in order to maintain the results.
How effective is Excessive Sweating treatment & how long will the results last?
Effects of this treatment begin during the first week following the injections, and a significant reduction in underarm sweating is typically evident within 4 weeks. Different people have different responses to the treatment, however the results last an average of 6 to 8 months before further injections are needed. This treatment will not totally eliminate sweating, but a significant reducation is usually noticed.
Who is Not suitable for this treatment?
BOTOX® injections are not suitable for those with neuromuscular transmission disorders (eg Myasthenia Gravis), chronic respiratory problems, coagulation disorders, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, if there is a history of allergy to the injection ingredients or infection at the site of injections, or if the patient is taking any of the medications: aminoglycoside antibiotics, anticoagulants, muscle relaxants or aspirin.
Risks & Complications
Side effects from this treatment are typically infrequent and rarely troublesome. There may be increased sweating in other (untreated) parts of the body and, even less often, there may be some muscle weakness. Such side effects disappear within 4 months without requiring treatment.
Many treatments for excessive sweating have been described, but few are either effective or acceptable. None of the alternatives have been without the risk of complications.
- Topical agents are ineffective and may cause irritation and staining.
- Electrical Iontophoresis may provide relief but is time consuming and requires frequent and numerous treatments. It is ineffective.
- Tablets often have unacceptable side effects and are only partially effective.
- Surgical Operation often fails to cure excessive sweating and can result in numerous complications.
BOTOX® is one of the most effective, long lasting and minimally invasive treatments that stops excessive sweating.
