Aging is associated with the development of lines and wrinkles caused by sun damage, gravitational effect, and muscular action. BOTOX® is by far the most popular line & wrinkle smoothing treatment in men. BOTOX® is a purified protein toxin produced by the clostridium botulinum bacteria, it blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralysing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed and youthful appearance.
BOTOX® treatment is suitable for men who:
- want to eliminate frown lines or brow lines and furrows.
- are not yet ready for face lifts or other cosmetic and plastic surgeries to improve their appearance.
- want a simple and fast procedure to eliminate wrinkles with little downtime and recovery.
- suffer from excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).
How does BOTOX® work?
A very small amount of BOTOX® is injected with a very fine needle into the muscle in the area being treated. It blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle weakens thus the skin overlying the muscle relaxes and the wrinkle in the skin gradually softens and often disappears.
A minor sting is felt for a few second as BOTOX® is injected into the muscle but once the injection is complete there is usually no discomfort or pain. No sedation or local anaesthetic is required. The procedure itself usually takes less than 10 minutes.
It usually takes 4-10 days for the muscles to be affected, at which time, you will notice the gradual improvement of the lines and wrinkles.
Following the treatment
You have a slight temporary redness and / or bruising of the skin at your injection sites which are minor and of short duration, but otherwise, there will be no visible signs of your treatment.
Risks & Complications
For detailed information concerning the risks and complications associated with BOTOX® please refer to Risks and Complications of BOTOX®.
How long will the results last?
Depending on your lifestyle and how your muscles react to the treatment, the effects usually last up to six months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects may begin to last longer, sometimes up to eight months. We recommend no more than two treatments per year.
Please note that about 2% of patients have pre-existing antibodies to BOTOX®, which render it ineffective. Unfortunately there is no way of identifying this small group of people beforehand.
